By Scott B. Elkind, Esq.
Over the past months, the Office of the Inspector General has issued many reports which have described various performance aspects in the Social Security Administration and cited the following:
- There is a large range of average processing times for Disability Determination Services (DDS)(offices responsible for initial and reconsideration decisions) with the majority of offices taking 60 to 140 days in Fiscal Year (FY) 2013. The worst being in Hawaii at 140 - 157 days
There are DDS offices which have employees who are taking more than double the national average to process claims with no specific action taken by SSA. The greatest number of these slow examiners were located in Virginia (54), Colorado (36) and California (21)
DDS staff audit revealed 214,000 cases which had medical evidence at hearing which was not acquired during the initial and reconsideration stages despite being reported to personnel. The cost to process initial claims are $460 - 600 while it costs $1400 - 2300 to process cases through hearing.
